A sustainable life
Today while working the routine chores of the farm, I was able to see the effects of the basics of a sustainable lifestyle. This past weekend Matt and I picked some apples from our trees. Today I peeled, cored and separated the apples to make spiced apple rings for canning, the peelings and some extra good fruit went into a bucket to make vinegar. The cores and not so good fruit was destined for the compost pile. I also had some extra apples and decided to feed the rabbits an extra treat today. Every part of the apple was utilized. I delivered the apple compost to our compost pile and within seconds the chickens were enjoying the meal. Upon entering the rabbit barn they became excited with the smell of fresh apples. Some even pulling the apple piece out of my hand to eat. Organic apples grown on this farm, utilized to feed ourselves, the cider is both consumed by us and added to the rabbits water supply weekly. The peelings feed the compost for soil which then we use in the garden and the fruit trees.
